Covid-19 Update: India Administers 9 Crore Vaccine Doses, Maharashtra Accounts For 55 Per Cent Of Nation’s Active Caseload

India has crossed a landmark milestone under its world’s largest vaccination drive which was launched on 16 January 2021 as the cumulative number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed nine crore mark on Thursday (8 April).

As per the provisional report till 7 am today, 9.01 crore vaccine doses have been administered through 13.7 lakh sessions.

Eight states account for 60 per cent of the total doses given so far in the country, with Maharashtra alone accounting for 9.9 per cent of the total doses administered, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said in a statement.

Maharashtra is followed by Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Kerala.

In terms of the number of daily doses administered globally, India stands at the top with an average of 34,30,502 doses administered per day. India is followed by the USA with 30 lakh doses per day.

In the first phase of India’s vaccination drive, the healthcare workers and frontline workers were vaccinated against Covid-19 virus. The second phase of the vaccination began on 1 March. From 1 April, all those above 45 years of age are eligible to receive the vaccine.

India’s active cases continue to rise with 1,26,789 new cases registered in the last 24 hours. Maharashtra alone accounts for 55.26 per cent of the total active caseload of the country indicating the alarming situation in the state.
