Days Before A Hearing On Human Rights In South Asia, Indian Envoy Briefs US Lawmakers On Kashmir

India's ambassador to the United States, Harsh Vardhan Shringla on Wednesday (16 October) briefed several US lawmakers on the situation in Kashmir and assuaged them, reports News 18.

Ambassador Shringla shared facts with Rep Brad Sherman of the House foreign affairs committee on the steps taken to maintain peace after Jammu and Kashmir's special status was abrogated.

In the briefing to members of the House foreign affairs committee, Shringla elucidated law makers on the actual ground realities and situation in Jammu and Kashmir and told them as of 14 October, 40 lakh subscribers across Kashmir have their post-paid mobile phone services restored.

Several Congressmen who were not members of the committee also attended the ambassadorial along with Congressman Ami Bera who was the only Indian-American lawmaker present at the briefing.

Shringla and other diplomats from the Indian Embassy in Washington and consulates spread across the US have reached out to hundreds of Congressmen and their aides after abrogation of the state's special status.

Congressman Brad Sherman is holding a hearing on human rights in South Asia, in particular Kashmir, next week, and Shringla assured the lawmakers, if any of their constituents from Kashmir cannot reach their families, he will personally ensure communication is established.
