The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has withdrawn the plea it had filed in the Delhi High Court challenging Election Commission’s recommendation to disqualify 20 MLAs of the party for holding ‘office of profit’, Firstpost has reported.
The plea was reportedly withdrawn because President Ram Nath Kovind has approved the disqualification of the MLAs.
According to the portal’s report, the party is expected to file a fresh petition soon.
Responding to Election Commission’s decision to disqualify the MLAs, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has said that the constitutional authorities were behaving like "handmaidens of the central government".
“There are false cases against 20 persons, they raided me too… but only found four mufflers. They tried everything and finally, today they have disqualified 20 MLAs. But when we won 67 seats, I wondered why? Now I know that the universe knew that these MLAs would get disqualified,” he has tweeted.
Questioning the disqualification, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia has written calling the move “unconstitutional” and “illegal”.
“Is it justified to push Delhi into polls? Isn’t this dirty politics?” he asks in the letter.
According to the Times of India, polls for the 20 seats, which will fall vacant after the disqualification of the AAP MLAs, could be held within six months if the party fails to get relief from the High Court.
