‘Delhi Metro Cannot Provide Free Water To Commuters’, DMRC Informs Delhi HC Why

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has told the Delhi High Court that it cannot provide free water to the metro commuters because, on its own, it doesn’t have any source of providing drinking water facility and is dependent on Delhi Jal Board and other agencies. Drinking water, however, can be availed across its network in Delhi at Rs 2.

The Delhi High court had asked DMRC to clarify how it could justify not providing free drinking water to the metro commuters. The court made these remarks while hearing an appeal against an earlier order passed by a single bench of the court which said that a person has the right to drinking water but not at free cost.

DMRC in an affidavit has said that it is providing the facility of drinking water for metro commuters at Rs 2 across all of its network but if somewhere it is not available people can ask Delhi metro staff for drinking water. The affidavit also said that signage would be provided by it in this regard.

The corporation said that it is regularly taking feedback from Delhi metro commuters on what aspects of the metro network require improvement and what should be taken up with special emphasis. However, complaints are being lodged for many years about non-availability of free drinking water.
