An FIR has been registered with the Delhi Police against former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Sharjeel Imam for inciting the protestors protesting against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) At Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) to 'cut-off' the State of Assam from the rest of India, reports Hindustan Times.

Imam, a software engineer, has also been involved with the long-going anti-CAA protests at Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh.

The FIR has been registered under section 153 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) which stands for “wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot.” The development comes after a video of Imam's speech had gone viral on social media on Saturday (25 January).

In the video, Imam was heard saying, “If we have 5 lakh organised people then we can permanently cut off Assam with rest of India...if not permanently, then at least for a few months... only then will the government hear our voice.”

Meanwhile, Assam police has also registered an FIR against Imam under the stringent provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

It should be noted though that after Imam's speech went viral, protestors at Shaheen Bagh have dissociated themselves from his views. They have said in a statement, “We disassociate ourselves from any such narratives and establish yet again that there is no organising committee at Shaheen Bagh, no leader, nor any one particular organiser.”
