A charge sheet will soon be filed by Delhi Police against former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar, student leader Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya and other activists for sedition, according to Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik, reports Deccan Chronicle.

This latest development comes as part of a controversy which began in 2016 when the three student activists were arrested for their role in organising an event at JNU, protesting the capital punishment meted out to 2001 Parliament attack mastermind and Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist Afzal Guru. Anti-national slogans calling for the destruction of India and supporting Kashmir’s independence were allegedly raised on the occasion.

Patnaik said, “The case is in stage of finalisation. The investigation was complex as the team also had to visit other states to take statements. The charge sheet will be filed soon.”

The arrests of Kanhaiya Kumar and others were met with sharp criticism from sections of the opposition, who accused police of working on BJP instructions. The BJP had on the other hand strongly condemned the event for stoking anti-national feelings openly in the country’s capital.
