The Delhi police in an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court on Wednesday (4 March) sough contempt action against former Sonia Gandhi led National Advisory Council (NAC) member Harsh Mander over his inflammatory anti-CAA speech, Hindustan Times has reported.

While the court was scheduled to hear Mander’s petition seeking FIRs against BJP leaders for their speeches, the focus turned on Mander’s own speech where he can reportedly be seen inciting a frenzied mob of anti-CAA protestors in Jamia by saying that “the future of this country will not be decided in either the Supreme Court or the Parliament, but it will be decided on streets of this country.”

During the speech Mander also accused the Supreme Court of failing to safeguard “humanity, secularism and equality” in cases like Kashmir and Ayodhya, while insinuating that he has no faith in the apex court.

The Chief Justice of India S A Bobade took strong objection to Mander’s comment and refused to hear his petition against the BJP leaders.

Troubles mounted for Mander during the course of the hearing when Delhi Police filed an affidavit demanding contempt of court proceedings against Mander.

“It is, therefore, submitted that the petition filed by Harsh Mander may kindly be dismissed with exemplary costs and proceedings of contempt of court be initiated against him”, said the affidavit.
