Delhi To Get 2 Metrolite Train Corridors As Centre Issues Directives To DMRC To Get Work Started

In a major boost for connectivity in the National Capital Territory of Delhi, the Union Ministry for Housing and Urban Affairs has issued a directive to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to build two Metrolite corridors between Rithala-Narela and Kirti Nagar-Dwarka Exhibition cum Convention Centre (ECC), reports Financial Express.
Similar to a normal train set operated by the Delhi Metro, a Metrolite train consists of only three coaches and can accommodate as many as 300 passengers in one go. Meanwhile, the cost of constructing a Metrolite system is about 30 per cent lesser than that of building a conventional Metro rail system.
The corridor proposed between Kirti Nagar and Dwarka's Sector 25 is 19 kilometres long and will be connected to three lines of the Delhi Metro, thus acting as a major feeder rail system to aid connectivity. Another corridor proposed between Rithala and Narela is 21.7 kilometres long.
The Delhi Metro will now be preparing Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the two corridors which will then be sent to the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) for approval. Once the nod is received, the DPRs will then be sent to the centre, after whose nod, the project construction will begin.
It should be noted that the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is a 50:50 joint venture between the GNCTD and the Government of India.
