The city of Malegaon in Maharashtra despite officially reporting only 12 Covid-19 related deaths so far has seen an unusual spike in the number of deaths and burials since April, Indian Express has reported.

The city recorded 580 deaths in April, over 100 per cent spike year on year and a 48 per cent spike as compared to March.

This has led to fears that a few of these deaths may have had Covid-19 as a co-morbidity but went undetected and close relatives of the deceased may have contacted the same.

As per official records, the city has recorded 229 coronavirus cases and 12 deaths, there has been no death officially attributed to Covid-19 since 27 April.

As per Raees Ahmed Ansari the administration of Bada Kabrastan - Malegaon’s biggest burial ground, they buried over 30 bodies each day for three consecutive days last week. The burial ground though is said to receive only six to seven burials on a regular day.

Malegaon is a Muslim dominated city with 79 per cent of the residents belonging to the said community.

The number of cremations though has stayed relatively unchanged during this period.

Malegaon Emergency Operation Centre’s chief Pankaj Ashiya has said that authorities would randomly test relatives of those deceased to check for possible infections.
