Differently-Abled Athletes Get Their Due: Government To Build International Standard Stadium In Meghalaya

Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Thawarchand Gehlot, on Thursday (October 25) announced that an international standard stadium would be set up for differently-abled people in Meghalaya, India Today has reported. The estimated cost of the stadium is Rs 200 crore.
The initiative was announced at the aids and assistive devices distribution camp held for differently-abled people. The initiative was proposed by state Chief Minister Conrad Sangma who approached Gehlot with the idea while being ready to provide 50 acres of land for the construction of the stadium. The project is expected to be completed before the National Games 2022 despite the detailed project report yet to be prepared, said the Union Minister.
The Minister also announced that the central government would set up a Composite Regional Centre in Meghalaya. The ministry also aims to build a similar national sports stadium for differently-abled athletes in five different states across the country.
The government has also taken other measures like setting up state of the art physical rehabilitation centres across the country with all the necessary equipment. In addition to this, the government has undertaken measures to educate the differently-abled athletes with vocational and on-hand training along with economic rehabilitation.
