The Road and Transport Ministry has issued a notification, applicable with immediate effect, that puts digital vehicle documents like Registration Certification (RC) book and Driving Licence (DL) at par with original paper documents, Financial Express has reported.

The documents presented through DigiLocker or mParivahan will be considered legally acceptable under IT Act 2000 and Motor Vehicles Act 1988. The DigiLocker platform has been built by Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology which allows citizens to store important documents online.

The notification has been addressed to Principal Secretaries of all states, all secretaries of department of transport , Director Generals of Police (DGPs) / Additional Director Generals of Police (ADGPs) (Traffic) and Union Territory transport commissioners.

Further, the ministry has said that the insurance details of vehicles are also being uploaded by insurance board into the government’s ‘Vahan’ database. These will be reflected in the mParivahan and eChallan apps, the notification said. If vehicle registration details and insurance copy is available on the mParivahan app, the physical copy of insurance is also not required as per the new rules.

These rules will help the common man in carrying all required documents in digital format and eliminate the requirement to carry original documents at all times.
