The Delhi University (DU) has made it compulsory for applicants to include mathematics in their ‘best of four’ subjects to get admission in Economics (Hons). Officials said the logic behind making maths compulsory for the best of four is to prepare students for industry skills like data crunching and analytics.

Despite the DU mandating the policy for all colleges in the varsity, minority colleges like St Stephens and Jesus and Mary College (JMC) are following the old rule in which students only needed to pass in mathematics to apply for Economics (Hons), The Indian Express reports.

In the prospectus of St Stephen’s, it is said: “Students who want to apply to Economics (Hons) should have been very comfortable with Class XII mathematics…”. The prospectus does not mention maths in the best of four subjects criteria.

Tutor for Admissions at St Stephen’s, C B Jha said, “Students have to study math in Class XII, and there will be a rider on that. When the interview is conducted, the department will decide what the rider will be, but maths doesn’t necessarily have to be included in the best of four subjects, as is the case in other DU colleges.”

It is a similar case for candidates applying for Economics (Hons) in JMC. While the college has made it compulsory for maths to be studied in Class XII, they do have additional criteria. Students should have scored 80 per cent in maths. But, there is no mention of maths included in the best of four.
