The Delhi University (DU) is all set to remove the additional eligibility criteria they had introduced for all subjects in undergraduate courses, the Times of India reports. The DU would amend the criteria following a Delhi High Court order.
From the academic year 2019, the DU introduced maths into the best of four subjects for Economics (Hons) course, leading to a student moving the high court to scrap the rule. Many such additional criteria’s were also included in other subjects.
The DU also had additional eligibility criteria in other subjects of UG courses like English (Hons), Hindi (Hons), Persian, Urdu, Arabic (Hons) and BA programme. The university may also consider scrapping them.
On Friday, the High Court asked the university to return to the old eligibility criteria in these two courses- Economics (Hons) and BCom (Hons). Further, the HC told DU to extend the registration process from 14 June to 22 June. In the old criteria, students only needed to pass in mathematics to apply for Economics (Hons).
“The admission committee has been told to look into all criteria that are going to disadvantage students. It’s likely that the additional eligibility requirements may be done away in all cases,” a senior university official, said on condition of anonymity.
Earlier the bench of Justices Anu Malhotra and Talwant Singh while ruling against additional criteria said that the DU would need to carry amendments in eligibility criteria with a six-month notice before the admission process begins.
