East Coast Railway Achieves Major Safety Milestone: Eliminates All Unmanned Level Crossings In 2018

In a bid to enhance safety, the East Coast Railway (ECoR) has announced that it has eliminated all unmanned level crossing gates (UMLCs) falling under its jurisdiction in 2018, reports The New Indian Express.
The Ministry of Railways under Piyush Goyal had earlier set a target to eliminate all the ULMCs by 2020. The ECoR, given the promise, has fulfilled the objective by removing all the gates before October 2018, says an official report as quoted by New Indian Express. In 2019 alone it has eliminated almost 117 UMLCs making 414 UMLCs since 1 April 2014.
The Ministry had since 2014, given the highest priority in railroad safety and to reduce mishaps and human casualties. All these UMLCs closed in ECoR jurisdiction were by providing road under bridges (RUBs) or limited height sub-ways (LHSs), diversion and manned, it said.
As per a Times of India report, the Indian Railways has eliminated all broad gauge unmanned railway crossings except one, which will be completed by March end.
