Football fans in India could soon watch the likes Real Madrid and FC Barcelona play in the country. According to various reports, India has put in a surprise bid to host the ‘Supercopa de Espana’, also known as the Spanish Super Cup, Fox Sports Asia reports.
The Spanish Super Cup, which is played between the winners of La Liga (Spanish first division) and the Spanish Cup. However, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) recently announced a revamp from the two-team tournament to a four-team tournament to be played outside Spain.
The budding Asian footballing nation faces competition from Saudi Arabia and the USA to host top Spanish teams with the likes of Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos, Eden Hazard and Antoine Griezmann.
According to Khel Now, if India’s bid is accepted, the four-team competition would be held between 8 January 2020 and 12 January 2020. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Valencia would be participating in the annual tournament after qualifying based on the 2018-19 season results.
If RFEF permits India to host the tournament, it would be the first time India would hold an official European club competition. India is one of the developing footballing countries. In recent times, India has hosted Bayern Munich (2012), Argentina, Venezuela (2011) and the U-17 Fifa World Cup (2017).
