As part of its 2019 strategy, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Uttar Pradesh has begun collecting information on religious sites at the booth level in addition to details of Scheduled Caste (SC) and Other Backward Classes (OBC) population, Times of India has reported.

Equipped with data on temples, ashrams and mutts, the party aims to strengthen its position among Hindu voters and core caste groups for the Lok Sabha next year.

The party’s state unit has distributed a pro forma to 1.4 lakh party officials in charge at the booth level, and has sought details of name of the religious site, its location, names of priests and their mobile phone numbers. “The aim is to reach out to the followers of such institutions through their heads and leaders,” a source quoted by TOI said.

The party has also sought details, like names, mobile phone numbers and profession, of important people and core voters in the area from booth workers.

J P S Rathore, vice-president of state BJP, said that booth selection committee meeting will be held between 16 August and 25 August, in order to recruit and prepare workers to promote welfare schemes of the party both at the Central and state level.
