The Election Commission (EC) announced on Tuesday (4 June) that the dates for the assembly elections will be announced later this year and is expected to make the final announcement after the Amarnath Yatra ends in August 2019, reports Economic Times.

The Jammu and Kashmir is under President's rule as the PDP-BJP coalition government collapsed in June 2018. The Governor's rule had taken over the administration of the state on 19 June 2018 and finally President's rule had been imposed over the state on 19 December 2018.

The EC in the course will keep on monitoring the situation in the state on a real-time basis, taking inputs from all the necessary quarters.

It should be noted that almost all political parties from the state had sought early elections to the state assembly. However, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Jammu and Kashmir administration apprised EC in a meeting held on 26 April that it would be difficult to meet the security requirements for the elections immediately in the view of troops being deployed towards Amarnath Yatra which is to begin from 1 July.
