Although it is grappling with multiple issues to fulfill orders for its Model 3, Elon Musk’s Tesla is pushing ahead with a new type of electric vehicle - a semi truck.

“Tesla Semi Truck unveil to be webcast live on Thursday at 8 p.m.! This will blow your mind clear out of your skull and into an alternate dimension. Just need to find my portal gun,” Musk informed in a tweet on Monday.

The new vehicle, which will be unveiled on 16 November, had originally been expected several weeks earlier, but was delayed to address Model 3 bottlenecks.

Musk had revealed a teaser image of the truck at the TED 2017 conference in Vancouver. At Tesla shareholders meeting in September, Musk has said the Semi Truck will hit the roads in 2019.

“We will probably reach scale production on the semi in about two years. Maybe 18 months, but probably about two years,” he had said.

However, due to delay in the launch, his plans could be affected.

Tesla will faces fierce competition as many established semi builders have already moved into the electric vehicle space. Daimler unveiled an all-electric truck named the E-Fuso Vision One last month, while Cummins released its Urban Hauler Tractor even earlier than that, in early September.

However, Tesla’s semi could potentially overcome the competition with its range. While electric trucks designed by Daimler and Cummins have a 350-kilometre range and 160-kilometre range respectively, unconfirmed reports suggest Tesla’s first semi could have a 500-kilometre range.

Although very little is known about the truck's design, experts believe the prototype could resemble a futuristic, concept-looking truck.
