Enabling The Disabled: Centre To Set Up Sports Centre For People With Challenges, At Gwalior In Madhya Pradesh

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved a proposal to set up a Centre for Disability Sports at Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh at an estimated cost of Rs 170.99 crore over five years.
This decision to set up the sports centre is in line with Section 30 of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016 which requires the government to take steps to ensure effective participation of disabled persons in sports activities by creating appropriate infrastructure.
It should be noted that currently, the country does not have a single specialized sports training facilities for Divyangjan (specially-abled). Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had announced the setting up of such a facility in his 2014-15 Budget speech.
Sports For Inclusion
“Improved sports infrastructure created by this centre will ensure effective participation of persons with disabilities in sports activities and also enable them to compete at the national and international levels. Setting up of the centre will develop a sense of belonging in Divyangjan to facilitate their integration in society,” said a government release.
