There has been a noticeable drop in the number of students enrolled in professional higher education courses in 2018-19, with the decrease in those pursuing engineering courses B.Tech and M.Tech leading to an overall fall of 9 per cent in student numbers for the category, reports The Indian Express.
From 2014-15 to 2018-19, the number of students enrolled in an M.Tech course fell by more than half from 2,89,311 to 1,35,500. B.Tech enrollment also declined, but no so substantially, seeing a fall of around 11 per cent from 42,54,919 to 37,70,949 in the same time period.
Yet, other professional courses saw a spike in the number enrolled students, with MBA seeing a rise from 4,09,432 to 4,62,853, and B.Ed seeing a massive jump from 6,57,194 to 11,75,517.
The specific decline in engineering enrollment points to a general realisation among students and parents that the saturation of the job market in the field is a real problem, and other attractive alternate career options are also available.
