Faisal Fareed, another key link in the Kerala gold smuggling case, has been arrested by the Dubai Police, Mathrubhumi reported.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Customs officials have confirmed that Faisal, a native of Kaipamangalam in Thrissur district, is currently in Dubai Police custody. UAE is said to have officially communicated the news regarding Faisal Fareed's arrest to Indian government.
Last week, a NIA court in Kochi had issued a non-bailable warrant against Faisal Fareed.
In its submission to the special court, the NIA had said that Faisal Fareed had forged documents to ensure diplomatic protection for the smuggled baggage.
“Faisal Fareed is the third accused in the case. The gold smuggled into Kerala was not used for jewellery but terror activities. The accused smuggled gold twice in 2019, in two batches of 18 kg and 9 kg," the submission read.
According to preliminary investigation, Faisal Faisal sent a consignment to UAE consulate Charge d' Affairs Rashed Khamis Alshemelli in which 30 kgs of gold were found.
The NIA had also requested Interpol to issue a blue corner notice against Faisal Fareed. The Blue Notice is usually issued to gather additional information on the identity, location, or activities of a person suspected to be involved in a crime.
Faisa Fareed was picked up from his residence by the UAE police on Friday. Faisal, who has commercial interests in the UAE,resides with his family at Al Rashidiya in Dubai.

Three others accused in the smuggling case - Sarith PS, Swapna Suresh and Sandeep Nair - are currently under the custody of the NIA, which is probing the matter.
The NIA also registered a separate case claiming the involvement of terrorist elements behind the smuggling
