Finance Ministry Continues Corruption Crackdown, Retires 15 Direct Tax Board Officials

Following similar moves earlier, the Finance Ministry has now asked 15 Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) officials facing corruption and other such charges to compulsorily retire, Mint reports.
The ministry had earlier retired 49 officials from the CBDT and the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) as per the Fundamental Rule 56J of Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).
As many as 22 tax officials accused of corruption and serious irregularities were sacked by the Centre in August while 27 senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officers including 12 from the income tax department were asked to retire in June.
Many among the CBIC officials had been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the past while some others had faced inquiries for irregularities, cases for disproportionate assets or collusion.
Officials can be asked to compulsorily retire by a competent authority once they are given at least three months’ notice in writing or three months’ pay and allowances under the rules.
