Fission Possible: Russia And India Sign Pact To Build Six Nuclear Reactors

India and Russia have signed a pact to build six new reactors during President Vladimir Putin’s recent visit to India, Reuters has reported. The location of these six new reactors has not been decided. A statement by the state-owned Rosatom said that India and Russia would also cooperate in third countries as well.
Rosatom also said that the third-generation VVER reactors would be built in collaboration with India and also enhance the participation of Indian companies in these new projects. Two Russian built VVER-1000 reactors are in operation in Kudankulam. Two more reactors are under construction at the same site.
Rosatom has become one of the largest companies in the nuclear power sector as Western firms like Areva and Westinghouse have landed in financial trouble. Rosatom operates 35 reactors in Russia and 36 reactors abroad in 12 different countries. Westinghouse and Areva’s nuclear projects have not seen much progress, partly due to nuclear liability laws in India.
