Former union minister P Chidambaram on Thursday (22 August) was sent to a five-day CBI custody by a special court in connection with the INX Media Scam.

Chidambaram was earlier produced before a special CBI court by the investigative agency which sought a five day custody to interrogate him in connection with the scam. During this time lawyers and family members of Chidambaram would be able to meet him for 30 minutes each day.

The special CBI judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar pronounced this order after listening to arguments and counter arguments by CBI's counsel Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and Chidambaram's lawyers Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi, reported Live Law.

Mehta argued that Chidambaram had been evasive and non-cooperative during the CBI probe and hammered home his point by citing Chidambaram's 'missing act' post Delhi High Court's rejection of his protection from arrest plea.

While agreeing to grant custody, the judged instructed that a medical checkup of Chidambaram needs to be carried out every 48 hours and that his dignity should not be violated during interrogation.
