Dinner tables across Goa may be starved of a staple delicacy after the state government on Wednesday (18 July) banned fish imports from other states until the end of this month, following recovery of consignments laced with formalin, reports news agency ANI.

The state is likely to face a shortage of fish over the fortnight following the move given that the annual ban on fishing activities along the sea coast is also in place now.

Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said that he has, in the interest of people of Goa, issued directions to ban the import of fish in Goa for next two weeks. “Once the official ban on fishing activities is lifted next month, there will be no crisis of fresh fish in the state,” he was quoted as saying in the report.

“This is just an abundant caution in the interest of the health of citizens and to avoid controversies and confusion,” the Chief Minister said.

Parrikar has also directed officials to conduct regular checks on fruits and vegetables. “If any preservatives were found in food items, they would also be banned,” he added.

Toxic chemical formalin is used to preserve bodies and prevent decay in mortuaries.
