Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s nationwide membership drive received a major boost yesterday (6 July) with the former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Bhaskara Rao joining the party in the presence of Union Home Minister and BJP's president, Amit Shah, reports Asian News International (ANI).
Rao joined the party at the Shamshabad convention centre which was inaugurated by Shah. The inauguration function was attended by the BJP's state leadership. Also in attendance were over 5,000 membership drive in-charges from the three districts of Hyderabad, Ranga reddy and Medchal.
Rao played a significant role in formation of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) along with NTR in 1982. However, after his brief stint of 31 days as chief minister, Bhaskara Rao left TDP and joined Congress (I) along with his close supporter Amukurajah Rao.
It should be noted that this was the first visit of the new Home Minister to Hyderabad since the BJP led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) roared back to power with an majority of 353 seats in the Lok Sabha.
