Professor Parthasarathi Chakrabarti, the director of the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur, on Sunday (23 December) said that there is an urgent need to upgrade the institution’s infrastructure, reports Press Trust of India.

"To bring better students we have to upgrade infrastructure, such as building classrooms with multimedia facilities, improving basic infrastructure,” Chakrabarti was quoted saying by the report.

He also said that "NITs and IITs have excellent infrastructure and students make a comparison." Chakrabarti has served IIT-BHU and NIT Allahabad in various capacities in the past.

“Comparing to national institutes there remain huge gaps – regarding classrooms, quarters, faculty,” he said. Chakrabarti had assumed charge of the IIEST in May this year.

Earlier the Director said that nearly 22 new research projects, a total worth of Rs 31.49 crore, were sanctioned to the institute, by various agencies such as the UNICEF Kolkata, the Indian Council of Medical Research, the CSIR and the Department of Biotechnology.

New consultancy projects worth Rs 1.98 crore have also been sanctioned by agencies like the Kolkata Port Trust, the Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd and the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Ltd, he added.
