Sri Guru Ram Das Jee International Airport in Amritsar witnessed 48 per cent growth in passenger footfall post the introduction of direct international flights and better infrastructure, as reported by Tribune India.

December 2018 witnessed the airport’s highest-ever international commuter footfall of 83,276 compared to that of December 2017 which was 56,284.

“There is already a huge demand for direct flights to London, Toronto and Vancouver from Amritsar in the of 550th Guru Nanak Dev Gurpurab celebrations scheduled from November,” said FlyAmritsar Initiative convener and Amritsar Vikas Manch overseas secretary, Sameep Singh Gumtala as reported by Tribune India.

The boom in the footfall is credited to the launch of four direct international flights in 2018 by, Air Asia X (Kuala Lumpur), Air India to Birmingham, IndiGo (Dubai) and Spice Jet (Bangkok). However, the contribution of domestic traffic is also significant with the domestic passenger footfall at the airport increasing by 8.6 per cent up from 1,62,932 in December 2017 to 1,76,898 in December 2018.
