Arguably the greatest musician on the planet, Kishoritai Amonkar, is no more. She passed away today at her residence in Mumbai. She was 85.

Tai, as she was respectfully addressed by disciples and fans alike was counted as amongst the most prolific and also the most important Hindustani musicians of the previous and current century.

Beginning her training under her mother, Mogubai Kurdikar, who was an extremely accomplished musician herself, Kishori tai went on to become the foremost vocalist of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana.

Kishori tai was renowned as much for what she had to say as she was for she had to sing. For this reason, she was equally sought after for both concerts as well as seminars on music. She passed away a week before she would have turned 86, on 10 April.
