Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday (21 September) said that he has directed the National Road Safety Council (NRSC) to meet every two months and share their updates with the minstry.

The NSRC is an advisory body which was established under section 215 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 with the objective of improving road safety aspects in the road transport sector. The Council is chaired by the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways.

Gadkari, along with Minister of State in the Road Transport Ministry General V K Singh, attended the introductory meeting of new members nominated in the NRSC in Delhi on Tuesday.

The minister also informed that he would write letters to chief ministers and collectors to ensure that District Road Committee meetings happen regularly.

During the meeting, Gadkari emphasised on deciding driving hours for truck drivers of commercial vehicles, similar to pilots, to reduce fatigue-induced road accidents.

The minister added that he has directed officers to work on a policy to include on-board Sleep Detection Sensors in Commercial Vehicles, at par with the European standards.
