Adding another feather in the cap of the already highly decorated, Chief of Army Staff Bipin Rawat is now inducted into prestigious International Hall of Fame at the US Army’s Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth.

An alumnus from the college having graduated in 1997, Rawat is one among the finest warriors emerging out of the reputed institution. The General is on a five day visit to US.

Rawat, who assumed the office after retirement of General Dalbir Singh is the 27th CoAS. Hailing from the Pauri Garhwal district in Uttarakhand, Bipin Rawat’s family has been serving in the Indian Army for generations. His father Laxman Singh Rawat was Lieutenant General.

Rawat is a seasoned military wizard, whose alma mater includes National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, Indian Military Academy, Dehradun and Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. To top them all, he possesses an MPhil in Defence Studies from Madras University. In 2011, he was awarded a Doctorate by Chaudhary Charan Singh University, for his research on military-media strategic studies.

Rawat, 61, is into the service since 16 December 1978.

Marshalling his battalion in the 1987 Sino-Indian skirmish, Rawat was at the tactical fore when the Indian Army conducted surgical strikes across the Myanmar border. As the head or Dimapur based 3 Corps, Rawat led 21st battalion of the Parachute Regiment which carried out surgical strikes in 2015 striking the NSCN-K millitant group’s base. That was a retaliation by the Indian Army to the killing of 18 Indian soldiers in an ambush by the dreaded separatist outfit.

Rawat also had a brief stint commanding multinational brigade in Democratic Republic of Congo as part of UN peace keeping mission.
