Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is planning to phase out paper passes and move towards a pass based on kilometre/destination/time based paperless bus passes, Economic Times has reported.

“We are working on a plan to introduce a variety of passes. The facility will be made available to the commuters in smart cards,” Director (Information Technology), BMTC Tanusree Deb Barma told Economic Times. The smart card-based system is likely to be rolled out in the next three to six months.

Currently, BMTC offers daily, monthly and student passes. The corporation had introduced Metro-feeder Vajra monthly passes to encourage Metro passengers to use BMTC services.

“Our team is developing a software application that allows passengers to buy trip-based, kilometre-based and time-based passes,” another BMTC official told Economic Times. These bus passes can be bought or recharged on different platforms like business outlets and the internet.

Transport specialist Pawan Mulukutla and Vinay Sreenivasa of Bengaluru Bus Commuters Forum welcomed the BMTC move to introduce these passes.
