Government Can Bring A Law To Build Ram Temple Based On Past Precedence, Says Retired SC Judge Chelameshwar

Retired Supreme Court judge often labelled in media as ‘chief dissenter’ Justice J Chelameshwar has reportedly said that the government could enact a law to build the Ram temple in Ayodhya even when the dispute is before the Supreme Court (SC), according to Business Standard.
"There have been instances where the legislative process dismantled the court's decisions," Chelameswar said at an interactive session hosted by the All India Professionals Congress, an organisation affiliated to the Congress party.
"I'm aware of occasions that had happened in the past, where the legislative process scuttled the decisions of the Supreme Court," he said.
He cited the examples of the Karnataka Assembly passing a law to overturn the SC order on the Cauvery water dispute and other instances related to inter-state water dispute between Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana.
"The country should have opened up to these things much earlier. A law on Ram temple is always possible as we (Supreme Court) did not stop it then," said the retired Judge.
Justice Chelameswar had been in the limelight when he along with three other SC judges opened a front against then chief justice of the apex court, Justice Dipak Misra, addressing a press conference where they voiced their reservations about the way cases were being assigned in the SC.
His comments have come as the demand for enacting a law to build the Ram temple in Ayodhya is gaining traction within various political and non-political circles. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat last month had stated in his speech that construction of the temple was a matter of ‘self-esteem’ and will bring “an atmosphere of goodwill and oneness in the country."
