In a major boost to infrastructure, the Government is looking to construct railway lines along key expressways which have been proposed to be constructed in the nation, reports Economic Times.

The development comes as the officials from the Ministry of Railways and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) having already having held meetings to explore how the development of such corridors could be materialised.

As of now, five to six upcoming corridors have been identified by MoRTH to be developed under the ambitious plan. These include the expressways which are built along Delhi-Amritsar-Katra and Chennai-Bengaluru routes. The former has been taken up on a priority basis. Ministry of Railways will be assessing the feasibility of the projects.

This gains significance as issues could arise given road and rail alignments are very different. However, if materialised, the plan could help the Government to save significant sums of money spent on land acquisition for the greenfield expressways.

Apart from the two aforementioned corridors, the other corridors which have been proposed to be developed under the plan by FY25 include Ahmedabad-Dholera, Kanpur-Lucknow, Amritsar-Bathinda-Jamnagar, Hyderabad-Raipur and Nagpur-Vijayawada.
