Gujarat Bids Good-Bye To ‘No-Detention Policy’: Pass And Fail For Classes V, VII To Resume From 2019-2020 Session

Following the Rajya Sabha nod to revocation of no-detention policy, Gujarat is set to reintroduce the earlier pass and fail criteria for classes V and VIII from academic year 2019-2020, reports Times of India.
The Parliament had approved a bill to abolish the ‘no-detention’ policy till Class VIII by enabling state governments to allow schools to fail students based on their performance in examinations.
Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar had said that the amendment to the bill was brought in since 25 states were demanding alteration to the “no-detention” policy.
Gujarat was the first state to oppose UPA government's decision of not detaining students in class I-VIII under the Right to Education Act after the present NDA government took over, said Bhupendrasinh Chudasama, Education Minister of Gujarat.
"The no-eduction policy has adversely affected the quality of education," Chudasama added while advocating exam-based promotion for class III as well.
