Harvard University Rated Number One In Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education College 2018 Rankings

For the second straight year in a row, Harvard University has retained its top position in the Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education College Rankings for colleges and universities in the US.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology bagged the second place. Yale University, Columbia University and the California Institute of Technology finished among top five colleges .

The Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education College Rankings are based on 15 key indicators that assess colleges in four areas: Outcomes, Resources, Engagement and Environment.

1. Outcomes accounts for 40 per cent of the weighting and measures things like the salary graduates earn and the debt burden they take on.
2. Resources, with a 30 per cent weighting, is mainly a proxy for the spending schools put into instruction and student services.
3. Engagement, drawn mostly from a survey of 189000 students and with a 20 per cent weight, examines views on things like teaching and interactions with faculty and other students.
4. Environment, at 10 per cent, assesses the diversity of the university community.

Hence these are the top 10 universities in the world as determined by those rankings:

This year’s rankings also saw some minor reordering in the top ten list. Yale jumped to Number 3 from Number 6, swapping places with Stanford University. Brown University moved up four spots to finish at Number 7.

Cornell University dropped out of top 10 list and it is now ranked at Number 11. The University of California, Berkeley improved its ranking and finished at Number 33.
