Former Congress party president Rahul Gandhi's close aide and senior leader of the party Randeep Singh Surjewala tasted defeat against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s Leela Ram, contesting from Haryana's assembly constituency of Kaithal, reports India Today.
The final figures showed that it remained a close contest till the end of all rounds of counting, and Surjewala lost to Ram by a total margin of 1,246 votes. Accepting his defeat in the state assembly elections, Surjewala extended his congratulations to Ram of BJP on winning the electoral contest.
Speaking to the media persons, Surjewala also said, "I bow down to the mandate and accept my defeat."
Surjewala, who has been elected to the state's assembly twice in the past, won both the times, in 2009 and 2014 from Kaithal itself. It should be noted though that in January 2019, Surjewala contested the Jind assembly constituency's by-polls from Haryana and suffered a defeat against BJP's Krishan Middha.

The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
