The Delhi Rail Metro Corporation (DMRC) will be constructing a 370-meter-long-subway, connecting the Terminal-1 (T1) of Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) with the IGI Metro Station. The Times of India reports the subway will be an ease to travellers as they will not need to walk the distance.

The subway will have escalators and elevators along with travelators. Anuj Dayal, executive director (corporate communications) of DMRC said, “Commuters travelling to and from the terminal will be able to directly enter and exit the metro station using the subway. With the help of elevators and escalators, they will have seamless access to the airport.”

He adds almost 30 per cent of construction of the subway has been completed. The DMRC, which faced engineering challenges because of hard rock during excavation, used cut-and-cover technology to build the subway.

The arrival and departure gates of the domestic terminal will be connected with Gate No 3 of the metro station, Dayal said while adding the staircase is unique and spacious as it will have a capacity to carry 26 people at a time.

Delhi Metro’s Magenta Line opened in May 2018, putting the domestic terminals of the airport on the metro map. The DMRC wanted to connect the domestic terminals with the metro station before the opening itself, but could not do so due to expansion plans of the domestic terminals.

The subway is constructed due to lack of connectivity from the station to terminals, due to which passengers needed to carry their luggage on foot to reach the terminal and had to crossroads with busy traffic.

According to DMRC, the direct route from the metro station was earlier set to be ready by January 2019, will now open in May 2019.
