Ship carrying fly ash to Pandu port, Assam (IWAI | Twitter)
The longest haulage in inland water transport movement in India was achieved when fly ash was transported from National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Kahalgaon plant, Bihar, to Pandu port in Assam via Bangladesh. The fly ash was transported by Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), Financial Express has reported.
According to IWAI, 1,233 tonnes of fly ash was transported from Kahalgaon in Bihar to Pandu port in Assam, covering a distance of 2,085 km.
The inland water route was chosen for the transportation of fly ash because of the lack of railway facilities in north-eastern India.
The Government of India wants to develop the rivers of the north-east as a hub of inland water transportation, be it passenger or cargo transportation. The whole of the north-east will be connected to Kolkata through the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol (IBP) route of the Brahmaputra river.
Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
