In a recent development, The National Commission for Minorities has rejected, on Wednesday (5 December), Justice Kurian Joseph’s controversial “minority tag is a hindrance to career progression” statement.

The Commission’s Vice-Chairperson, George Kurian is a strongly criticised the statement made by Justice Joseph. George has accused the former judge of “creating unrest in society and instilling fear among minorities with his remark,” as reported by The New Indian Express.

“He wanted people from minority communities to think that if the fate of a Supreme Court Judge is like this, what will be the fate of the common people? His intention is to create unrest and communal disharmony,” he added.

Marking Justice Joseph as a ‘hypocrite,’ George asked whether Justice Joseph can say that he was instrumental in selecting judges from the minority community when he was a part of the collegium on whose recommendations judges are appointed.

George also criticised the former judge for the 12 January press conference where Justice Joseph along with three other Supreme Court judges made allegations against the then Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra. George rubbished the claims saying that they were based on assumptions and rumours.
