Traffic violations like over-speeding and drunk driving are set to attract heavier fines from 1 September onwards as 63 clauses of the Motor Vehicles Amendment are set to become operational, PTI has reported.
“The Bill was passed (in Parliament). And we have decided to implement 63 clauses (of the act) from September 1,” said Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari.
“In these 63 clauses we have increased the penalties. In case of drunken driving, over speeding and overloading among others, the fine has been increased,” he added.
The clauses have been sent to the law ministry for vetting and the ministry with get back with the results in 2-4 days, Gadkari said.
The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2019 was passed earlier containing several provisions for higher penalties as well as compensation for accident victims. It also protected good samaritans from possible harassment during the legal process after a victim had been admitted.
Speaking on the road traffic accidents in the country the minister also said that the government was in the process of setting up a Rs 14,000 crore project to plug the safety gaps at black spots on highways.
