Henceforth, Karnataka School Students Will Not Dance To Filmy Tunes; Focus To Be On Culture, Heritage, Say New Rules

Annual day celebrations in schools is the only time students get for exhibiting their talents in music and dance, predominantly. But Karnataka’s Department of Primary and Secondary Education is of the opinion that filmy songs are “inappropriate” for young minds and have hence taken a call to not allow such songs in campuses. The rule will be in-effect from the coming year across all government and private schools affiliated to the state board.

The New Indian Express quoted an official from the department as saying, “Recently, I was invited to an annual day function at a city school, and was shocked to see the songs chosen for students to perform to. A majority of the songs were from movies and also not age-appropriate. I discussed this with my colleagues, who expressed similar concerns, and we decided to do something about it. So, from next year, schools will not be allowed to use film songs for performances.”

The officials are instead interested in songs that reflect the history, culture and heritage of the country. It is most likely that the songs will be vetted before being played, once the rule is in effect.
