Coming down heavily on the Congress legacy of failing to incorporate Kartarpur corridor into India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticised the party’s historical insensitivity and ignorance of people’s sentiments at an election rally in Hanumangarh, Rajasthan, reported The Tribune.

The Kartarpur Corridor links Dera Baba Nanak shrine in India with Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur, Pakistan. The latter is the final resting place of the founder of Sikhism Guru Nanak Dev.

Modi lambasted previous Congress leaders for their lack of vision and their insensitivity for people’s religious sentiments towards Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur. He highlighted that Kartarpur was in Pakistan today because Congress leadership during partition had failed to understand the importance of Guru Nanak Dev for the Sikh community.

Addressing the rally, he stated, "The credit of the Kartarpur corridor goes to your vote. Correcting Congress mistakes was my destiny.”

The foundation-stone laying ceremony of the Kartarpur Corridor was held last week, giving rise to a new controversy involving Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu. He was photographed at the ceremony with Khalistani separatist leader Gopal Singh Chawla, who is reportedly close to Lashkar-e-Taiba chief and 26/11 mastermind Hafiz Saeed.

Sidhu had also previously come under heavy criticism for hugging Pakistani Army Chief Qamar Bajwa during Imran Khan’s inauguration ceremony in Islamabad, with many prominent leaders accusing him of insensitivity to the Pakistani Army’s continuous aggression along the Line of Control (LoC) in which scores of Indian soldiers have been martyred.
