Section 377 has been recently decriminalised by the Supreme Court of India, but Cubbon Park, which is Bengaluru’s prime lung space, has been allegedly under the threat of ‘immoral activities’ from the LGBT community.
A police complaint has been filed seeking legal action against homosexuals indulging in ‘illegal activities’ at the park. Smoking, drinking and allegedly ‘instigating’ people to take part in ‘immoral activities’ are some of the grounds on which the legal action is being sought.
S Umesh, president of the walkers’ association at Cubbon Park, said, “We don’t have a problem with anybody visiting the park. But homosexuals are roaming around in the park in groups, shouting slogans and instigating men to join them in immoral activities and even abusing them. They have created such an atmosphere that the number of other visitors, including foreigners, children and other tourists, has reduced,” Times of India reported.
“Moreover, homosexuals are smoking and drinking in the park and engaging in immoral activities, which have to stop. These people are involved in illegal acts during the night; elderly people are unable to go for a walk in the park after 8 pm,” he added.
However, transgender rights activist Akkai Padmashali said that sexuality minorities are aware of how to conduct themselves in public. The problem lies not against a few individuals who are breaking the law, but the attitude displayed towards the members of the community, Akkai added. Cubbon Park police have informed the press that they’ll look into the matter and carry out a proper investigation.

The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
