Hundreds Come Out On The Streets In Taiwan To Commemorate Tibetan Uprising Day, Protest Chinese Oppression

Hundreds of people, including Tibetans, began their march on the streets of Taipei in Taiwan against the Chinese rule on the 62nd anniversary of Tibetan Uprising Day on 8 March.

The protesters urged the people to speak up against the oppressive practices of the Chinese communist regime.

The Tibetan Uprising Day commemorates the 1959 Tibetan uprising against China’s occupation of Tibet. It was followed by a violent crackdown by the Chinese forces on the Tibetan independence movement, and the flight of the Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso into exile.

The protest reportedly began from the Zhongxiao Fuxing MRT Station and went up till Xinyi Plaza, the protesters marched and shouted slogans like, "Free Tibet, China out", "Tibet belongs to Tibetans", "Long live Dalai Lama!".

According to the an ANI report, Focus Taiwan, the organiser of the march, said on Sunday that they had planned another gathering on 10 March at Freedom Square in Taipei.

The rally was supported by Taiwanese politicians as well as the members from the ruling Decomcratic Progressive Party, legislator Hung Sun-han, and Taipei City Councilor Miao Po-ya of the Social Democratic Party.

Tashi Tsering, the president of Human Rights Network for Tibet and Taiwan brought up the rights of Tibetans. "Does anyone need permission to go home? We Tibetans have been trying for 62 years to go home", said Tsering.
