Hyderabad Metro Sees Daily Ridership Cross 1.5 Lakh, Passengers Now Shifting From Tokens To Smart Cards

The Hyderabad Metro has reported a surge in its daily ridership which had set its earlier record at 92,000 passengers per day. Larsen and Toubro Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (L&T HMRL) which operates the system, has reported that the daily ridership has breached the one lakh figure to reach 1.5 lakh passengers per day, according to the Times of India. HMRL also announced that the daily number of trips had increased from 520 to 580.
Another significant change announced was the shift from single-use tokens to smart cards that have gone up by 50 per cent.
Hyderabad Metro’s passenger growth is among the fastest in the first year of opening in India. The Delhi Metro reported a daily ridership of 14,000 passengers in 2006, four years after its opening across 33 km. Bengaluru’s Namma Metro had a daily average ridership of 25,000 in 2012, a year after services opened. The first line of the Mumbai Metro had a minimum ridership of 64,000 passengers per day and carried 250 million passengers within 957 days of opening.
