L&T Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) will go several shades green soon by harvesting solar energy and wind energy to meet at least one-third of its total energy requirements from renewable sources, reports The Hindu Businessline. Solar rooftop installations have been set up at four metro stations with others following suit, while a total of 100 acres of open areas across the project are also being equipped with solar units.

The Hyderabad Metro’s station is based on the various norms laid down by the Indian Green Buildings Council. While the solar panels installed are based on the Resco model where private firms invest in the equipment and then supplies power at a fixed cost.

The stations have been designed to consume less power, make use of natural lighting and wind conditions. Rolling stock too has been designed to consume lesser power. The railway stations themselves are designed with minor gradient changes that act as a natural brake while entering stations and gives a slope while exiting the station.
