Rachakonda Police in Hyderabad has arrested a Non-Residential Indian, based in Dubai, for allegedly converting a woman to Islam and raping her.

India Today reported that the Malkajgiri police arrested Safdar Abbas Zaidi, who is originally from Darulshifa. The accused met the victim, who is 25 years old, while the two were working at a software company in Hyderabad.

According to the Malkajgiri police, the two got involved in a relationship when they were working together and the victim moved to Dubai after the accused, who promised to marry her, settled in Dubai.

According to a report in the Deccan Chronicle, the accused forced her to convert to Islam and then dumped her for allegedly failing to follow religious customs. The daily’s report also says that the accused had confined the girl in Dubai but she managed to escape from confinement and return home.

“She was only allowed to go out wearing a burqa, with her face covered, and she was forced to follow all the Islamic traditions and rituals. The more she pleaded, the more he forced her,” said the family, according to Deccan Chronicle.

Circle Inspector of Malkajgiri was quoted as saying, “Even both of their families agreed for their marriage and it was fixed for April this year. However, a few months back, some rift broke out between the couple which led to the cancellation of the wedding.”

The police have booked a case under Section 376 (punishment for rape), 417 (punishment for cheating) and 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) provisions. There had been a lookout notice issued against the accused.

On Friday, September 28, the accused was arrested and sent to judicial custody after he arrived at the airport in Hyderabad.
