IIT Kharagpur Team Launches Indigenous Electric Three-Wheeler ‘Deshla’ With Better Features Than Autos, Totos

A team of students and professors of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has developed an electric three-wheeler ‘Deshla’, that can prove to be a better alternative of autos and e-rikshaws (Totos) currently running on roads.
The IIT Kharagpur team, led by Professor Vikranth Racherla, launched the prototype of the ‘next-gen’ electric auto on 11 September.
With its powerful motor, lithium ion battery that can last up to 6-7 years, high load carrying capacity, sturdy frame and yet easy manoeuvrability, Deshla is a better option than diesel-guzzling, polluting autos and even the flimsy and high-maintenance Totos, an IIT Kharagpur statement said.
Unlike the Totos that employ lead-acid batteries, Deshla is powered by a lithium-ion battery. It also has a steering mechanism for better maneuverability on roads instead of the unreliable handle bar mechanism of the totos. The back wheels of the Deshla have independent suspension to ensure comfortable ride for passengers. Further, the vehicle uses hydraulic brakes instead of mechanical brakes for more effective braking.
“The road test of our vehicle is very encouraging. Its comfortable, easy to drive, and jerk-free. We built this from scratch," said Racherla, as reported by LiveMint.
The Electric Vehicle Group (EVG) team of IIT Kharagpur has created the embedded and power electronics subsystems of Deshla, like BMS (battery management system), Motor Controller, Battery Charger, GPS and 3G Cellular connectivity modules in-house.
The IIT Kharagpur team is now looking for raising funds to start the commercial production of the vehicle.
