An Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras team led by Dr Uday Khankhoje have developed a new method of detecting breast cancer by the use of microwaves or Radio Frequency (RF) waves, The Hindu reports.

While various groups in the US and Europe are working on hardware for detecting cancer, the IIT Madras group has used the popular method of ‘Deep Learning’ for the same.

The method addresses a mathematical challenge while also increasing the permittivity range observed. Permittivity is the characteristic which differences between normal tissue and cancer tissue.

The method is seen as a portable, affordable and safe alternative to X-ray scans and MRI scans which are used to detect cancer tissues. The article of the team is published in the journal- IEEE Transactions on Computational Imaging.
